Did you know that sea water doesn’t freeze at 0º C? That is because of the salt content in it. More salt colder it needs to be the water to freeze it. For example, sea water with a salinity of ~34.7, will freeze at -2 º C. And when it freezes it expels the salt, so ice in Antarctica, for example, is basically fresh water.
And this is important, for example, for bottom water formation. A very dense water that is formed around Antarctica and helps modulating the climate around the world, but let’s talk about this on the next post…
